Maybe 10 times. And some of them still send me Christmas greetings.; so I know I'm on their databases - pointlessly.

Yes. It's a normal part of doing business online. New translators should do their best to impress such clients but should not get their hopes up. I have often suspected that getting new translators signed up (with no prospect of work) is a task given to new project managers to help them get a feel for the business. Essentially, we help train them by responding to their queries as if we take it seriously... because every once in a while, there truly is a job waiting there.

This is a typical part of the onboarding process. Agencies will often do this just to "pad" their translator list. "Gee, we have 10,000 translators on our books" (but they might use maybe only several hundred). Potyomkim village. The more laborious the onboarding process, the less likelihood of any jobs. Nowadays I refuse to do any onboarding. It has made my life a lot easier.
