Being my own boss, I take days off here and there when it suits me, weekends, weekdays, special occasions and whenever there is no translation work (like today). After completing a large project, I always allow myself one or two days off to freshen up.

Work is always coming in, so if I want some time off I just have to take it.

I'm curious, though, if the possibly big economical crisis we are entering today will affect my work flow. The financial crisis in 2008 and the Covid crisis in 2020 didn't, but I do worry about it. Sometimes it seems like everything is coming together to create some kind of perfect storm (war, climate, cost of energy, civil unrest ...).

What is this "time off" of which you speak?

But seriously, I tend to work even when on vacation, and my "time off" is usually limited to a couple of weeks at Christmas, although I do work over the festive period, although less hectically than the rest of the year.

I take time off as I see fit, with some annual regularity for two festivals I always visit as well as 7 to 10 days of vacation with my wife. I am also off on any and all bank holidays in my part of Germany as well as USUALLY (though not always) between Christmas Eve and New Year's.

Getting over Freelancer FOMO is a challenge Sep 7, 2022

Work is going to come in if I'm on vacation or not. What I do is send emails to my most regular clients about my planned vacation, and I always remind myself and my clients in writing that me taking time off helps me to be even better when I return to work.

It took me years and it's really difficult because we all know we miss out on money when we take time off, but we have to!

Over the past 15 years, I traveled to Europe (Spain, Paris, Italy, and Portugal) three times, and to the UK twice, as the guest of clients and colleagues. Over the past 15 years, I traveled to Europe (Spain, Paris, Italy, and Portugal) three times, and to the UK twice, as the guest of clients and colleagues. In the case of the clients, I was still working with them on various projects. So, as far as they were concerned, there was no problem when it came to me taking a fairly long break from any work at all. I thought it was very kind of my clients, esp., since it demonstrated that they appreciated the massive efforts I made as their translator up till then, and like I would make for them again, just a day or two after I got back to the States. But like Maria, I contacted a couple of the agencies in the UK that contacted me fairly frequently during those years. I was never all that worried about losing them as clients; but I did inform them of my traveling plans/lack of availability as a kind of courtesy. They kept me in mind and contacted me often when it came to doing projects, many of them very interesting. So they were the first, and really the only agency clients I thought about, when it came to informing them of my temporary unavailability.

Taking time off at a quiet time of year is just common sense to me

or alternatively I'm working all the time as it says in the song... it's been years since I've heard this song or this band (thanks for unwittingly reminding)

I plan my vacations to match my husband's (who's not a freelancer), once or twice a year. Before, he didn't have much choice, he had to take them whenever it was suitable for the office. Not anymore, and we plan to take time off in different seasons so we can enjoy ourselves as much as possible.
Our plans are made at least 2-3 months in advance, and I immediately let my regular clients know I won't be available then (never had any problems with that). As the date approaches, I refrain from

I take time off in late August, which is always a slow time here. Giving birth in late August was a smart move, it means I can celebrate my son's birthday in style every year.
