Poll: Do you live in a town with less than 50.000 residents? Thread poster: ProZ.com Staff

No, my town has more than 50,000 residents | May 7, 2024 |
I live in Lisbon. In demographic terms, according to data from the National Statistics Institute, Lisbon has a resident population of 548,000, but if we consider the metropolitan region (greater Lisbon) it has 2.89 million inhabitants
I live in a town of about 15,000 residents. That's 'less [sic] than 50,000', but more than 10,000, so I can't vote.
(edited to adjust the thousands separator and to highlight the classic 'less/fewer' error

FEWER!!!!!!!!! | May 8, 2024 |
I used to live in a town of 49,999 residents but now one of them has had a baby. I wonder how that’ll change me as a translator?

The biggest city I have ever lived in reached the mark of 140,000 sometime in 2022, but I am now very happy to live in a rural town of 8k.

Well, they used "than" instead of "then". Focus on the positive aspects![](https://cfcdn.proz.com/images/bb/smiles/icon_razz.gif)
In any case, I can't participate in this poll, living in a town of around 30 k inhabitants (perhaps 30,001 by now; I haven't kept track )

as Imperia has about 43,000 residents but it's interesting to see how people enjoy getting into a twist about "less" and "fewer", without even knowing the difference - making a mistake themselves while supposedly correcting others. The rule is the same for both British and American English and is well explained here:

which explains why we say "less than three miles" ... "less than twenty dollars" ... "less than five years" and "less than 50,000 people" ... "all things which are often thought of as amounts rather than numbers".
The question is written correctly.

About 65,000 I think. But then it's part of the Paris region with about 12 million inhabitants. A considerable chunk of the 68 million inhabitants of France.

Fewer / less than 7500 | May 8, 2024 |
I cannot boast about how large my town is, but it's a great place all the same. I live in a country with a population of less than 6 million.
But don´t let that worry anyone. The government is a coalition of three parties, and there are twelve other parties - fifteen altogether, plus five independents - in the national parliament, the Folketing, which has 179 members.
Two parties are from Greenland - representing a population of 56,661
and two are from the Faroe... See more I cannot boast about how large my town is, but it's a great place all the same. I live in a country with a population of less than 6 million.

These four parties are represented by one member each in the Folketing, and they often abstain from voting on matters that only affect Denmark. But they can swing the choice of prime minister, for instance.
These are just statistics - fortunately I am not allowed to discuss politics here!

Of course it's my wrong! And it's Webster's wrong too. But we can live with our mistakes.
