I do have limits in terms of working conditions (credit period, compensation...) with customers, and data usage is not amongst them yet.
High speed internet without data caps is rather cheap nowadays. It was another story back in the 56 kbps modem era...
Still, I find it a bit of a waste when I download MBs of video from the internet for a minimum fee, e.g. to translate a dozen words of captions or speech, when 10kB screenshots could do just as well for context.

I don't understand the question and the answers options don't help at all, especially the one that says «No, it’s rude» (why?). Anyway, If I happen to receive a big work-related file in a week (I wish…), I’ll say no to all the others…

Most ESPs have attachment limits anyway - for gmail and yahoo it is 25 MB for example (is this "big"?).

| No problem, I use an FTP server | Jul 19, 2025 |
One of my clients has their own FTP server, and sends all files that way from their portal, and I return the translations the same way.
Another client sends PowerPoint files, which may be too large to send as mail attachments, so we use a free FTP server. For really large files or frequent use, we could pay a small subscription, but that is not necessary for our purposes.

Unless the deadline makes sense, it's not rude to send multiple MBs. In a world where most qualified translators can't find real work, can you really complain about getting one job after another? If so, you're either lazy or rich.

explain how it would be 'rude' to keep sending work related files to the person doing the work???

Around 20 years ago, most mailboxes would reject messages larger than 1 MB. If the sender didn't pay attention to their bounce notifications, you might never notice you received a big job. This did happen to me repeatedly, or at least I received other emails and phone calls asking why I didn't reply to the handoff.
There was no Google Docs or SharePoint either. Large documents were transferred via FTP or services like Yousendit/Wetransfer.

I suddenly feel like I belong in the museum for already knowing that. Thank you, Edwin.
