It happened by chance. My boss at the French Studies Department suggested I translate a series of classic Mexican films for subtitling, which would be screened at the Cinémathèque Française. It was a "coup de foudre". A passion that has lasted for over 30 years now. Sometimes, without even trying, life gets things right. | | | | Marzieh Izadi Local time: 21:52 Member (2019) English to Persian (Farsi) + ... SITE LOCALIZER

How could you ever feel that way, unless you don't like/need your job at all?

Hi Lieven,
I enjoy my job, and I rely on it as my only source of income, so I desperately need it. Still, I recognize that the replacement of human translation by AI is inevitable. I also admit that in certain areas, including translation, AI can already outperform me. On a personal level—I’d prefer that AI not take over my job. Yet on a global scale, I can see its benefits: it could finally resolve the “Tower of Babel” problem, making communication easier and bringing meaningful progress for humanity as a whole.

I'm sure that Kenyan workers who are being paid two dollars an hour to train AI and, above all, filter traumatic content for large US technology companies don't think this is "meaningful progress for humanity". NBC's “60 Minutes” programme dedicated an episode to them https://www.cbsnews.com/video/ai-workers-kenya-60-minutes-video-2025-06-29/ | | | | Zea_Mays Italy Local time: 21:52 English to German + ... | missing "???" button | Aug 6, 2025 |

The "Tower of Babel" problem has already been resolved by translation, performed by proper, human and educated translators. If we stop investing (time, effort and, yes, money) in languages, leaving it all to AI, it will create a "Tower of Babel" problem because from there it is only a matter of time until nobody understands anybody and knows no way to fix it. It will be like an abandoned garden when all gardeners are gone and gardening skills lost.

Also, at the risk of arguing with a bot, anybody who thinks that AI can do better than themselves is probably in the wrong profession and explains why it only serves those who don't know what they are doing. ▲ Collapse | | | | Daryo Local time: 20:52 Serbian to English + ... | Have you by any chance ... | Aug 6, 2025 |

It’s possible. I may also have written this sentence under the influence.
