If it is a new client I insist on a PO before beginning work or I ask them to sign my quote and send it back to me. I have signed contracts with some of my clients, but with three of my long-standing customers (one for more than 25 years of monthly work), things started (and continued) without any written agreement. Over the years, I have taken chances, and sometimes they paid off, though a couple of times my trust has been misplaced. I try to listen to my instinct.
