See more Dear fellow Prozians, Today, on Saint Jerome’s day, I would like to share with you some great news for our profession and I kindly request your attention. It is with great pleasure that I announce the birth of a new association in which I am honored to participate, and I invite you to learn more about it and consider participating as well. The association is called IAPTI: International Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters, or in Spanish, AIPTI: Asociación Internacional de Profesionales de la Traducción y la Interpretación. It bears two names because it is based in Argentina –as the idea originated there– but we hope to have an international presence, as the issues that we aim to address concern the translation community worldwide. Let me explain briefly why we have formed a new association. The objective is to actively promote the ethical practice of translation and interpretation. The keywords here are “actively promote". We are facing several problems today in our profession: crowdsourcing, emphasis on price instead of quality, flooding of the translation market with non-professional translators, limitations on the extent to which we can discuss rates and the need for a strong online presence where new translators can be guided by experts that have translators' interests in mind, among other concerns. This new scenario calls for new players to fill an existing gap by tackling these issues, and we aim to build up an international network to achieve this. Our strategy to address these issues includes workshops, lectures, courses, a mentorship forum on our website and several other forums for discussion of the above issues, which you are invited to browse and discover for yourself. We have very high hopes for this association and we know it can make a difference in our industry and improve the future of our profession. Of course, in addition to our longer-term goals, there are several direct benefits to us individually. Here are some of them: - Online profiles on the website of an international organization, which will give us worldwide visibility. We will also have an e-mail address with the same domain linked to that profile, e.g. [email protected] .
- Listing in IAPTI’s Member Directory.
- Access to a large network of professional translators and interpreters and the ability to form teams with trusted colleagues who share our values and beliefs and who -like us- support the ethical practice of our profession.
- An exclusive forum for IAPTI members where we can exchange information about the state of translation and interpretation today, discuss language issues, give and receive advice. http://www.aipti.org/ourforum
- Through a translation news service, we will receive the latest news in translation and interpretation, both in English and in Spanish.
- Access to a huge database of updated lists of resources such as glossaries, reference material, translation groups, portals, etc.
- Last but not least, our own translation magazine with articles written for us and by us.
The founding members of the association are all trusted colleagues with a passion for translation and interpretation and a huge drive to help achieve IAPTI’s goals for the good of everyone in this industry. Its board is headed by Aurora Matilde Humarán (President), Lorena Vicente (Vice President), and María Corinaldesi (Secretary General) and its Ethics Committee is made up of Ralf Lemster, Dan Newland, Santiago Murias, Maria Karra, Marcela Losavio, Atenea Acevedo, and Giuliana Buscaglione. The founding members and officers come from the United States, Germany, France, Greece, Argentina, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Latvia, Luxembourg, Egypt, Turkey, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, and Venezuela. You can find their names at http://www.aipti.org/autoridades/ and http://www.aipti.org/miembros_fundadores/ . The above information can be found in detail on our website at http://www.aipti.org . Please contact us if you need additional information on the association. We would be more than happy to answer questions and talk about our mission and our work. Thank you for taking the time to read this message. We are looking forward to seeing you among the IAPTI members. This looks like an excellent project. Added note: However, I do share Michele Johnson's concerns (see below) about the extent to which the new body's rules apparently govern what we, as translators and interpreters, are allowed and expected to do.

See more I am sorry not to share the happiness and to give the congratulations as of the rest of my companions for the creation of a translators new association on a global scale. Sincerely, I believe that to keep on dividing the translators in multiple associations at national and most at international level (an International Federation of Translators exists already (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Federation_of_Translators) is contradictory and especially useless, because the only thing that is obtained by that is to divide more and more an already very plural group and consequently to debilitate it with every new division. I am sorry to be a thinking entity, although perhaps I think in a wrong way.

Best regards. mm Hi Pablo, Thanks for your input. However, given the current state of affairs (i.e. industry trends and practices concerning the issues mentioned above), I disagree with you. Associations are not created to divide but to work together with the aim of achieving common goals through shared actions. That´s the reason why IAPTI´s been born. See more I'm really excited about all the new sites, associations, and general diversification arising in the translation industry right now. Your group looks promising and I wish you all the best. That said, there are some items in your code of ethics that seem problematic - I wonder if you could clarify: 1.2. Abstain from any and all sorts of conduct that might in any way harm or undermine IAPTI's interests. Does this mean members are not allowed to express criticism of the association on internet forums, blogs, etc.? And how much "fair comment" is likely to be tolerated? 3.4. Do nothing that might favor unfair competition by offering or accepting fees below those generally considered to be proper and fair on the market where they practice their Profession. I strongly object to anyone telling me how to run my business, especially in terms of rates, and I don't think I'm the only one. You don't see this as price fixing? I also wonder how this will be enforced. Will you provide your members with a list of the "proper" rates in their markets? Can you let me know in advance what the market rates in Germany are, so I can decide whether or not to join? 3.6. In cases in which they donate free services to non-profit organizations, never carry out work for which these groups might otherwise pay. Furthermore, inform the non-profit organization benefiting from these free services of the proper market value of same. How are members to know whether groups would have otherwise paid? I don't usually have knowledge of internal budgets. Don't you think your members are capable of deciding themselves what groups to volunteer for and whether or not to inform them of the market value of these services? 3.8. Report to the IAPTI Good Practices Commission, or to any other pertinent body of the Association, any colleague whose conduct may be detrimental to the profession and, furthermore, take part in any subsequent investigation into such conduct. *Any* colleague, anywhere in the world? So if I joined your organization I would be required to monitor the hundreds of thousands of translators all around the globe for improper behavior and report this to the ethics committee? That's going to be one busy committee. Or do you mean members instead of colleagues? Regardless of the practicalities, you don't see any problems with this policy in general? 4.4. Offer any and all cooperation within their possibilities to their Colleagues, and especially to those of lesser experience. So if I joined, I would have no choice about whom I cooperate with and what junior colleagues I have to mentor? ▲ Collapse | | | صفحات الموضوع: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » A new T&I association is born: IAPTI Protemos translation business management system | Create your account in minutes, and start working! 3-month trial for agencies, and free for freelancers!
