Oops. I missed out an HTML tag. Fixed now, Thanks for letting me know. | | | Compatibility | Nov 6, 2006 |
I have downloaded the program but then I found out you have to have Office XP or better in order to be able to use most of the functions. However, if you have this, it's time to download it - it will probably become commercial soon. This is actually the beta version.
Cheers! | |

MS Beta Versions of all kinds of programs have been available for free or a small nominal fee for a while. However, the Beta licenses expire in February (or April with the updated Beta version) of 2007. I don't know if this is the case for this program as well, but think again: MS giving something away for free???
Heike is right in expecting that this will eventually cost.
MS has always worked like a pusher: they give you something for free, let you use it, then after some time, they let you know that you can only keep using it if you pay. By the time you get there, you are so used to the piece of software and have based so many business processes on it that the software is now indispensable to you (yes, it's a DRUG).
This is MS's tried, tested and true international money-making... See more Heike is right in expecting that this will eventually cost.

Based on what Heike says, it's nothing other than a free trial during the Beta period - but if it's user-friendly, cuts down/facilitates your admin procedures and the related cost, in due time, isn't prohibitive, calling it a scam is a little over the top.

Yes, there is free MS software.

It's not a trial version, it's simply free. It seems to be a light version of MS Office Accounting Professional 2007 and it's targeted to USA and UK only. I recommend reading the FAQ. | | | Jerzy Czopik Germany Local time: 13:11 Member (2003) Polish to German + ... As Hynek correctly stated... | Nov 6, 2006 |
there is MS software for free: Internet Explorer for example.
You can also download Windows Media Player for free.
DirectX is a free software, without which computer gaming would be impossible nowadays.
Surely this is not scam.

I just found the link on a weblog and thought it might be useful.
I share many people's distrust of Microsoft, but the fact that this is labelled "Express" rather than "Professional" seems to indicate that this more basic version will remain free (but maybe it won't - how should I know?) - I remember MS Frontpage Express was always a free version of the more powerful programme.

But perhaps I did jump the gun a bit, with regard to its utility for our multilingual, border-free businesses - this beta version only uses the dollar sign, I believe. We'll see whether any eventual UK version sees its way to including at least the euro sign as well as sterling.

Since it's a beta test, I doubt the "real deal" will be available free. MS systematically plans their beta tests like this.
Also, the fact that IE is free means nothing. It's just a browser. But most other MS products (the more useful ones, especially the business-oriented ones) are not only not free but rather costly for what they offer.

Also, for the record, I did not say that this particular piece of software is a scam, but most MS projects such as this last just long enough to be hooked on them, so the overall approach is a scam. It's about forcing people to use their products... for money.
Here's an example: if I want to check my e-mail through Messenger, I HAVE to use IE to do that, even if SlimBrowser is my default browser. And even though IE - which is rather messy and causes lots of trouble - is free, I don't understand why I am obliged to use it even if I don't want to. In light of this and countless other MS anecdotes, I am sure you know what I mean by money-making scam. Maybe you don't like the expression used - help me to find another, more politically correct term to express this. ▲ Collapse

PAS Local time: 13:11 Polish to English + ... Free from Microsoft | Nov 7, 2006 |
Jerzy's example of IE is slightly unfortunate because you get it with Windows, whether you want it or not and cannot uninstall it.
There are a few bits from MS which are free, which you don't have to use and download if you don't want to. Most of these bits require the Windows Genuine Advantage thingy, so if you're using unlicenced software, you won't be able to install them anyway...

Windows Defender is transmogrified Giant Antispyware. It seems to be in eternal Beta, but without a time limit.
Maybe it will become a part of Vista. I haven't been following this carefully.

When you participate in beta test, you know from the beginning, that you will not be able to keep the software after the beta test time. If you want to use the final version, you have to buy it. AFAIK other software developer do the same, but only their beta tests are not as well known, as those from Microsoft. This is usual policy in the software world and not a push on you to buy something. Surely this is not such method as you describe.
And I really do not understand what is wrong with paying for goods I use? Or do you expect a car manufacturer to give you the car for free?
Developing software is neither easy, nor cheap, so what´s wrong with commercial companies, which are selling the software? What with their employees, when they shall give the software for free? Shall the employees live then for free? I do not know any country, where food and other goods would be for free.
Regards
Jerzy

@Pawel - what´s wrong with licensed software? Using unlicensed software is a crime... ▲ Collapse | | | Hynek Palatin Czech Republic Local time: 13:11 English to Czech + ... It's not a beta test | Nov 7, 2006 |

What makes you think it's beta? I downloaded and installed the mastodont and it says "Version: 2.0.7024.0". It's the "real deal" and it's free.

I don't understand how this example shows that Microsoft scammed you to start using a free software, get used to it and then have to pay for it. It only shows that Messenger probably requires IE for some of its features. SlimBrowser also requires IE and won't run without it - is it a scam too?
Yes, this free program is part of Microsoft's marketing strategy and an incentive to buy the Professional version, but I wouldn't call it "scam". | | | Pages in topic: [1 2] > | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Micro$oft freeware accounting software Trados Studio 2022 Freelance | The leading translation software used by over 270,000 translators.
