Dear Colleagues, A direct client has approached me with a project involving translation of drawings as well as standard texts. Some files are in AutoCad native format; others are in STEP (.stp) format that I assume can be exported to DXF/DWG format. I have an old Corel drawing program that can be used on DWG files, but it was quite clunky. I have an old Corel drawing program that can be used on DWG files, but it was quite clunky. Does anyone have experience efficiently translating such files (or their exports into a CAT-friendly format using CAT tools)? I'm especially interested in hearing from users of TranslateCAD. http://www.translationtospanish.com/cad/about.htm This program allegedly allows translating text in DFX files using a CAT tool. Any users out there? Thanks, Kevin PS I've seen older posts on this, but I was curious whether any advances had been made in the past 2 years. I should mention that I don't own AutoCAD, nor do I want to buy it for this project.

Hello Kevin, Take a look at CafeTran which supports Autocad dxf files. You can download the trial version from here: http://www.cafetran.republika.pl/download.html and check if it meets your requirements. Igor

The client informs me that his department can't do anything with STEP files, either.

The job is long gone, and I haven't had any similar requests since that time. I'm always amazed at responses to queries from long ago. I've had responses to a query from ten years ago. I'm impressed by how interested people are in solving problems, even "ancient" ones.

When you say AutoCAD source documents do you mean DWG files, which are the only type of AutoCAD source documents? Or do you mean DXF files, which are not AutoCAD source documents but a drawing exchange format that can be created and read by almost all CAD and GIS programs and software and also other types of software? What is meant by filtering on layer? Does this mean just translating the text on certain layers? I could see this as a disadvantage as some of the drawings that I have... I could see this as a disadvantage as some of the drawings that I have had contain many hundred layers and manually selecting layers would be somewhat daunting and prone to errors. Are you also able to translate the layer names? What type of text entities can be translated? Ben ▲ Collapse

From the The 261st Tool Box Journal: So now, once you select a DXF file and open Project configuration, you can select Filter options and then choose only the Filter layers that need to be translated. It includes this image: I assume that if you don't make any selection, all layers will be offered for translation. Regarding the renaming of layers: I'll draw the attention of the developer to this thread so that he can answer your question.

Ben Senior Germany Local time: 04:30 German to English Text objects? | May 22, 2016 |
Thanks for the information, it could be a useful tool for certain drawings. Perhaps a select all button would avoid any confusion. It would be more interesting to see what text objects are extracted for translation. As well as the obvious ones there are some that are not normally extracted from such apps, for example XData or text embedded in nested blocks. Ben
