Bio

Turkish-born, British-raised, and a keen student of Japanese!

I was born in Turkey, grew up in London from the age of 2 to 18, and moved back to Turkey as an adult. I’ve been working as a translator for the Turkish-English pair since 2016 and Japanese-English since 2021. Outside of my translation work, I also do freelance writing and editing for children's books and small businesses. I have a BA in business management (graduated with Upper Second Class Honours!) and spend too much time volunteering at my alma mater for my own good.

Times are changing and translation is no longer the same old game. Machine translations and AI have got a lot of people thinking that translators are no longer needed or worth the expense. I beg to differ.

Human translation is about more than just matching one word to another. We look at the ever-changing cultural and social context on both sides of the language barrier. We weigh each word and phrase on the tip of our pens, teetering on the tightrope between literal translations and idiomatic equivalents. Localization and transcreation have never been so vital and yet so overlooked in today's ChatGPT-crazed world.

A machine is never going to have the self-awareness to notice that it's just output a bunch of gibberish. It's never going to have a brain or a heart that can look at the text through the audience's eyes and tweak your message until it hits the right note. It's never going to do justice to the original work because it doesn't even have the capacity to try.

That’s why I’m still here and still translating, whether it’s for businesses who want to properly communicate their value proposition to their customers, or authors who want to speak to their readers with their souls. I’m here to take your message by the hand and lead your words to the other side of the page.
