French term or phrase: le grand récit algérien
Hello all,

I'm translating an article about the Hirak movement in Algeria, and am having trouble translating this phrase. I get the general tone, but can't seem to find an English equivalent.

In this section, the author is discussing how various studies have linked Hirak to other moments in Algerian history.

"Certains auteurs expliquent par ailleurs les mobilisations en se tournant vers le grand récit algérien depuis le début de la guerre de libération nationale, en 1954, ainsi que le nationalisme et sa crise , pour se retrouver vraisemblablement devant le résultat d’une longue et lente maturation sociétale qui prend sa source dans les profondeurs de la société."

Many thanks for your suggestions!

Ah yes, "narrative" is a good word to use. That's helped get my thinking going again! Thanks. Although, I think I will go with something more understated for "grand" as suggested by other users.

neutral  Steve Robbie: "Algerian grand narrative", perhaps, but only if the insinuation is "metanarrative" // Academic readers of the phrase grand narrative will inevitably think metanarrative when they first see it. Splicing "Algerian" into the middle won't alter that.

-> I think that is a reductionistic way of looking at the phrase I entered, and I don't think it really applies, in this instance./Sorry, but I don't think that it's inevitable that they will. Some of them are smarter than that.

disagree  Ben Gaia: "Great" does not work here as in English it sounds like there was some huge Empire spreading across the world.//All my comments are completely subjective.:)

the larger Algerian story...

Explanation:
I like "grand narrative" but here is my version in Plain English. The idea is that the full story behind events is part of a "larger" story.

neutral  Barbara Cochran, MFA: Never heard of " the larger story" in this context, although I most definitely have read the expression "the larger narrative" when it comes to political and historical texts.

great Algerian heritage

Explanation:
The heritage or tradition
The present ''hirak'' draws from a long heritage/tradition of nationalism and struggle. As a matter of fact, its maturity is evidence that it finds its roots in that heritage. It was founded by the forefathers and almost ''genetically'' transferred through generations. I guess that's the idea the writer is conveying.
