Persian (Farsi) term or phrase: به صورت اجباری
Greetings,

The full sentence:
قبلا همیشه قرآن را به صورت اجباری میخواندم، اما این بار حس میکردم باید در آن تئمل کنم

My dictionary says “compulsory” for اجباری but is the idea that she read the Qur’an as if forcing herself, not being able to wait until she'd finished, or that she only read it when forced to do so by others, or perhaps both?

All the best, and many thanks,

Simon

We can render it in two ways
Explanation:
به صورت اجباری is mostly used by Farsi speakers to mean "being forced by the others" but it can be used to mean "being forced by herself/himself" as well.
Here, the context should help us to decide about it.

example:
در زمان دبیرستان به صورت اجباری درس می خواندم
or
در زمان دبیرستان از روی اجبار درس می خواندم
These sentences mean that the person was forced by his/her family or teachers or by his/her fear of failing in the courses!

Explanation:

Before translating this sentence (given by Simon) into English I think we need to rephrase it since it does not appear much Persian like

قبلا همیشه قرآن را به صورت اجباری میخواندم، اما این بار حس میکردم باید در آن تئمل کنم

The suggested rewording is:
.پیشتر وقتی قرآن می خواندم بین واژه ها و سطور می دویدم اما این بار حس می کردم باید در آن تامل کنم
I think this reworded sentence could be justified by the contrast that holds between تامل and به صورت اجباری. The former means less speed and more concentration and the latter can simply imply the opposite and hence the introduction of the above rewording. This reworded sentence can help us get to a better sample translation as well:
I used to recite Qoran in a parrot fashion but now I thought it was high time to read between the lines.

I used to recite Qoran hastily but now I thought it was high time to ponder over the words.

Note: based on the rules of Persian orthography می must not attach its following component and hence می خوانم is recommended whereas میخوانم is not recommended. All the books in the Iranian educational system are also following this point.

Example sentence(s):
  • I used to recite Qoran in a parrot fashion but now I thought it was high time to read between the lines.
