Explanation:
Close" mi dà l'idea che sia molto vicina se non attaccata.

E poi, a seconda dello stile da adottare, si potrebbe dire:

"Quando sollevò lo sguardo la testa di Brian era inclinata accanto a quella di Paola"

oppure

"Quando alzà gli occhi Brian aveva/teneva la testa inclinata addosso a quella di Paola"

Qualche idea.
