I have a small problem with both answers so far: is the Czech's example really the REASON why it makes sense to preserve? are Czechs the REASON for preserving the canal? hmm, not really

I think that Czech's example demonstrates that there is certain logic in preservation - their example shows that it makes sense to preserve.
