En fait Flaubert ne s’exprime crûment que dans ses scénarios, auxquels la Cour n’a heureusement pas accès. Car on peut y lire par exemple que Rodolphe « prend le cul d’Emma d’une main » alors que dans le roman, "il allonge le bras et lui entoure la taille".

Mais encore, quand, dans le scénario, il « la traite en putain, la fout à mort », dans le roman, "Rodolphe jugea toute pudeur incommode. Il la traita sans façon. Il en fit quelque chose de souple et de corrompu. "

Dans ses plans, l’écrivain appelle cela « la vie du cul ». Il a besoin de cette étape d’écriture pour, dit-il, se la faire sentir.

Le procureur Pinard lui-même a bien perçu que malgré l’absence de descriptions pornographiques, transpirait dans le texte une force érotique permanente.
