En travaillant la scène qu’il appelle « la première baisade d’Emma » avec Rodolphe, Flaubert raconte à sa maîtresse qu’il se sent, comme un homme « qui a trop « foutu ». Il éprouve la même jouissance, le même épuisement, que son personnage.
Il écrit à Louise Colet : « Homme et femme tout ensemble, amant et maîtresse à la fois, je me suis promené à cheval dans une forêt, par un après-midi d’automne, sous des feuilles jaunes, et j’étais les chevaux, les feuilles, le vent, les paroles qu’ils se disaient et le soleil rouge qui faisait s’entre-fermer leurs paupières noyées d’amour. »
Il ne se doute pas que cette scène sera le premier tableau scandaleux décrit par le procureur.
