يعد المقدم مؤسسة قديمة في تاريخ الدولة بالمغرب، حيث ارتبطت بالأساس بالبنية الهرمية والتراتبية عبر تطورها التاريخي؛ فالمقدم كان دائما رتبة ضمن هرمية تنظيمية لمؤسسة كانت دينية، كمقدم الزاوية، أو إدارية كمقدم الدوار بالقرى أو مقدم الحومة بالحواضر والمدن. والمقدم يكون عادة من الأعيان، يتمتع بكل الصفات والخصال الحميدة بالإضافة إلى الجاه والثروة خاصة بالقرى؛ فقد كان يعتبر إلى جانب القياد من الشخصيات السياسية والإدارية المهمة التي تمثل السكان وتشرف على شؤونهم المحلية والجماعية. لكن مع بسط الحماية الاستعمارية على المغرب، وظفت سلطات الحماية القياد والشيوخ والمقدمين كآليات للتحكم في السكان من خلال إبلاغ الأوامر وتنفيذ التعليمات، ونقل كل ما يروج إلى السلطات الاستعمارية.

in the Tijaniyyah [Morocco], Shadhiliyyah, Rahmaniyyah [Morocco], and other Sufi orders, a muqaddam is a student of the Sufi path (a murid or dervish) who has been authorized by his/her Guide (aka shaikh, pir, or murshid) to assist in teaching the path to other students.
