Spécialité

English translation: option or elective

GLOSSARY ENTRY (DERIVED FROM QUESTION BELOW)
French term or phrase:Spécialité
English translation:option or elective

French to English translations [PRO]
Education / Pedagogy / Secondary school
French term or phrase: Spécialité
I am translating the report cards of a student of a lycée (high school, secondary school) in France and one of the subjects is marked as a "spécialié" which I assume is just a typo for spécialité. Since the student is not in university, I would not call this "major." Could this be "option"? Here is a French government page on one such spécialité. https://www.education.gouv.fr/bo/19/Special1/MENE1901576A.ht...

option or elective
Explanation:
I believe "option" works best for the UK with "elective" best for Nth America

https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/elective
"Something that's elective is optional — you can choose to do it, or not. An elective course in school is one you take because you want to rather than to fill a particular requirement, although you still get credit for it."

https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/option
"4. An option is one of a number of subjects which a student can choose to study as a part of his or her course."

https://www.ldoceonline.com/College-topic/option
"6. AT SCHOOL/UNIVERSITY [countable] British English one of the subjects that you can choose to study at school for an examination, or as part of a course at a college or university
Several options are offered for the student's senior year."

French Bac is not quite the same as A-levels in England but there are "options" at GCSE level.
And there are core and optional subjects in Scotland and Ireland at senior secondary/High school level

specialty/specialization

Explanation:
This seems the most obvious choice.

And within many of these specialty programs, students can further specialize...

What does specialization mean in education?

agree  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: I'd stick close to the FR termino here. "Option" and "spécialisation, -ity" are not always synonymous within the context of a particular programme, so Phil's suggestion works for me.

concentration / focus

Explanation:
Though also associated with universities, to say "concentration in history and geography" or something of the sort seems to still be relatively neutral to me. If the word spécialité appears by the subject and not in a sentence then maybe you could say "focus"? Here's a list of the spécialités, which I would have used "concentration" to describe: https://walt.community/article/bac-2021-faire-son-choix-parm...

Yes, I've seen "concentration," "study focus," and "core curricula," any of which could denote that the student's studies were focused on that spécialité.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Indeed, concentration is one term that I found: is this a term that could be found on an American high school report card, for example?

Asker: I think stream is more like the old S, ES and L "filière" that have recently been abolished.

Reference information:
D'après la source ci-dessous, "spécialité", dans l'enseignement secondaire à vocation générale, filère générale, en france est appelée "section" dans son homologue à vocation ou filère technologique.
https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enseignement_secondaire#:~:t...
