Krzyżówka Jolka

English translation: Fill-in crossword

Polish term or phrase: Krzyżówka Jolka
My Polish grandma always used to do these types of crossword puzzles - they are the kind that don’t give you the placement of the entries.

In my family we would always refer to them as “Jolkas” but I’m wondering if there is a direct English translation out there?

This is just for personal interest, any suggestions would be appreciated :)

BTW Jolka (with a capital letter) is a diminutive for the female given name of Jolanta. When talking crossword, simply "krzyżówka jolka" (no capitalisation) is sufficient.

agree  Jacek Rogala: I'am not certain if a "Jolka" here has to be written capitalised, but If not, the word "Jolka/jolka" should appear in your translation. There's plenty of crosswords worldwide, and this one regards Jolka! ;)

Jolka – rodzaj krzyżówki, w której określenia do haseł wypisane są bez podania miejsca wpisywania. Określenia wypisane są najczęściej w kolejności losowej, rzadziej w alfabetycznej kolejności odgadywanych wyrazów.

Autorką pierwszej krzyżówki, w której określenia podawane są w przypadkowej kolejności, była Maria Zagórska z redakcji „Rozrywki”, tworząca pod pseudonimem Jolka (stąd nazwa zadania szaradziarskiego). Pomysł narodził się w 1977 roku[1].
