symbols and narrative elements
Explanation:
We've had 'gestuale' before, and it was translated as 'action'. https://www.proz.com/kudoz/italian-to-english/art-arts-craft...

This tends to mean people fighting and performing acts of derring-do, but we don't know what is depicted here, so I've broadened it to 'narrative', which simply means people doing things.

Segnico probably just means symbols, such as flowers or other patterns, and the opposite of narrative.

‘The Gesture and the Sign’ featured recent works by a range of international artists that take their cue from pictorial aspects of lyrical abstraction. With an emphasis on the actual process of painting, lyrical or gestural abstraction can be characterised by techniques that are governed by the artist’s interaction with chance, intuition and circumstance. Triggered by diverse conditions and impulses, the paintings and works on paper in this exhibition share a common purpose in the primacy given to the gesture, the sign and material.

neutral  philgoddard: Gesto and gestuale are false friends - they rarely mean gesture and gestural in this kind of context. And when they do, it's in high-flown theoretical art criticism, as your examples show - not descriptions of plates.

Arte gestuale e segnica
