Dorland's Medical Dictionary provides several explanations, the main generic one being: "Any of a group of disturbances of porphyrin metabolism, characterized by marked increase in formation and excretion of porphyrins or their precursors." There are numerous types of porphyria conditions: acute porphyria, acute intermittent porphyria, congenital erythropoietic porphyria, congenital photosensitive porphyria, etc. HTH!
