Great question, haven’t come across this before. Definition: “titul a úřední hodnost, stav, zaměstnání.” Examples: “Propůjčiti charakter vyšší hodnostní třídy. Co si tedy p. otec pomyslí, když nedáš jeho panu synovi patřičného karakteru? (Kosm.) Malá cedulka se jménem i charakterem ukázala mu dvéře, do kterých vstoupil. (Svob.)” (All this PSJČ)

agree  Pavel Bakič: "Character" can also have a similar sense in English, but the examples on Wiktionary (https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/character, sense 12) seem to suggest that it only works in phrases where the position/office is explicitly stated.
