説明する Explanation: I think in this context (seeing as it's written by several Americans) it means explain. "Account for" is a phrasal verb adn has a set definition. I can see why you'd think it was "compensate" but here it is "X explains the Y error" http://ejje.weblio.jp/content/account for -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 3 hrs (2014-08-28 14:22:52 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Obviously (in the case of "account for the differences") the author is using "account for" to mean "compensate for/correct" so I would go with that. I suppose it's another case of technicians not making the best writers. It makes a little more sense in the overall context given after "account for the differences." It could go unnoticed when spoken but when written it's plain wrong. That said, it's the translators job to make sense of what the intended meaning is so if I would take the instances of "account for" to mean "compensate for/correct." Though you might want to mention this when the job is delivered.
