French term or phrase: garantir les conséquences
Hello,

Under the somewhat ambiguous heading ASSURANCE - RESPONSABILITÉ RECOURS
This expression is part of the following sentence:

Le LOCATAIRE PRINCIPAL fera **garantir les conséquences** de la responsabilité civile qu'il peut encourir en sa qualité de LOCATAIRE PRINCIPAL.

It continues like this:
Il assurera, en outre, la totalité de l'ensemble immobilier en valeur de
Idna
Local time: 07:08
English translation:obtain insurance for
Explanation:
The article is headed 'Assurance'.

'Garantie' in an insurance context means 'cover', and 'faire garantir' means obtain cover - 'faire' is not redundant as Mpoma implies.

The whole sentence is a very roundabout way of saying that the principal tenant will obtain third-party insurance.

agree  Mpoma: Yes, you're right: context is everything, and "assurance" removes any ambiguity. Actually I didn't say "faire" was redundant, but that it could be ignored.

  -> Thanks! That's very gracious of you.

agree  Andrew Bramhall: Yep, 'cover'or ' take out';

  -> Or 'take', according to Daryo.

neutral  Daryo: Not so fast: "faire" introduces a nuance of meaning that can not be ignored - must be clarified / Until proven to the contrary, this wording would mean s.o. else has to take this insurance, and this party has only to make sure it's been done.

  -> No, someone else, an insurance company, has to provide the cover.

cover the consequences (by insurance or personal guarantee)

Explanation:
LOCATAIRE PRINCIPAL fera **garantir les conséquences** : the HEAD LESSEE / (shorter-term) TENANT shall cause ** the consequences to be covered (by insurance or guarantee vs. a Deed of Suretyship for debt)** of such thi-party / occupier's liability as he may incur in his / the latter's capacity of HEAD LESSEE / TENANT

Garantir is wider than insurance cover/age and could include a third-party bond. Better safe with a wide, literal translation than sorry.

Example sentence(s):
  • The Guarantee Fund has as its object payment of indemnities under the obligatory Third Party Liability Insurance of Motorists and Accident of Passengers

neutral  Mpoma: At first I thought along these lines, i.e. wider than just financial. But in practice there is only one way to "faire garantir": I think this is just a synonym, here at least, for "faire assurer".

neutral  AllegroTrans: The heading (vital clue) is "ASSURANCE" - surely that is the nub of this?
