agree  Klaus Herrmann: "Staaten" determines the gender, and as it is the plural form, it's "die USA", or "in den USA".

Explanation:
die Schweiz also called schweizerische Eidgenossenschaft is made up of 23 small "States" called "Cantons".

die Türkei is actually the Republic of Turkey (die türkische Republik)

Die Dominikanische Republik

Die Bahamas (Inseln)= The Bahamas Islands.

Die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate

Die Niederlande= not too sure why it is called "die Niederlande" probably for the same reason we say the wetlands or the highlands.

it\'s die USA (die Vereinigten Staaten), but here you have to use the dative case to explain where (wo) he was. The präposition \"in\" is used either with the accusative case to express direction (wohin), or with the dative case to express location (wo).

that\'s why they used \"in den USA\" instead of \"in die USA\".
