Brandy-
A liqueur distilled from wine aged in wood.
The finest brandies are cognacs.
Cognacs-
True cognacs are from the Cognac region of France.
They are the finest of all Brandies.
Double-distilled
for a minimum of 3 years in Oak vats

The point being here that the name cognac, just as champagne, is \"generic\" for any such alcohol/spirit regardless of the country of origin.

Explanation:

но это в Гуголе встречается 93 раза, и в основном на русскоязычных сайтах.

"cognac alcohol" встречается в сети чаще, но не намного -- 167 раз.

brandy spirits

Explanation:
I don't know whether the big debate over the name cognac vs. brandy is still alive, but I see 152000 hits on Google for brandy spirits... (I seem to remember that the French won that debate so that the names "Cognac" and "Champagne" can only be used with products actually made in those regions).

agree  Kirill Semenov: I see only 8000 in my Google but it still beats "cognac spirits" (349). :) Though, me personally, I prefer beer, so I'm not a specialist. ;-) ADDED: Just be patient and wait until it's Friday evening at your place. :)
