I'm really looking for some peer agreement about this sentence. This extract is from an article about rebuilding the 'Brazil' brand post-demonstrations.

'Entre a simpatia do mundo e a decisão de vir para o Brasil há um longo caminho a ser percorrido pelos turistas.'

I'm tempted to say something along the lines of:

'There is a world of difference between global sympathy [for the situation] and getting tourists to come to Brazil.'

I'm just wondering if I have got the general meaning correct and would appreciate any input.

Translating a general good will toward Brazil into an actual visit to the country is no mean task.

I think that you have to rearrange the sentence and translate non-literally to convey the intended sense in natural English. I point out in this connection that the use of "turistas" here is not really logical (because persons have to actually come to Brazil to be considered "tourists").

The only way to understand a country is to actually visit the country and even better to live there for a while and actually talk to regular working people in their own language (and not just the people who speak perfect English and interact with tourists as part of their jobs).
