Yes, words are often dropped in speech, so a shorter form here of "as long as" or "so long as" which, in this context means "provided that". Baldy makes it clear that the ONLY reason he goes there is "to get off this stinking island". He has no interest in being anyone's teammate. Being on a team does not necessarily mean that someone is going to be a "teammate" a word synonomous with mate, ally, colleague, collaborator, co-worker, partner etc. when Baldy is going to be none of those. He is clearly no team player or no one's ally. He is simply there to bobsled as it suits his own purposes. Burdock seems to be OK with that. His reply basically says: "just show up and provided you do that we won't expect anything else from you. |
