Many if not most lawyers would not say "copy" if it was in fact, as here, an "exemplar".

I suggested "issue" merely as an alternative to avoid any ambiguity as to whether or not "A" is the original or first replacement issued.

The Canadian Embassy Official stated that the photo page of the passport contains the passport issue number, the holder's given name and surname, parents' names...

which suggests that the newly coded original is "A" and its replacements will be "B", "C", etc.

"Issue" may be a good alternative. What's not clear is whether "A" is the original or the fist issue/copy of a lost/stolen/damaged "DNI"?

"quien tenga un DNI duplicado o triplicado puede seguir con ese documento toda la vida si no lo pierde. Pero en caso contrario, recibirá un Ejemplar A. Y si lo vuelve a tramitar, un Ejemplar B."
This seems to suggest "A" is what used to be called a "duplicado" and "B" a "triplicado", unless "A" is the original and "B" is the "duplicado" (first copy issued)? The title, "Nueva denominación para DNI duplicados" suggests that "A", "B" and "C" are all copies.
