agree  Holly-Anne Whyte: This rendering is simple and clear. I would also avoid using 'governmental' as this is not specified in the source text and it is entirely possible that the 'organismos' referred to are quasi-governmental or independent of government in some countries.

  -> Thank you, Holly-Anne, I quite agree. The phrase "a cargo del área" seems to be causing confusion for some here, but there's nothing to suggest it means anything other than "scientific bodies", whether governmental, quasi-governmental or academic.

agree  neilmac: Less specific, but I'd use both this and Darius' suggestion....
6 hrs
  -> Thanks, Neil.

agree  Thomas Walker: I agree with Holly-Anne - "governmental" is not in the ST.

agree  Marcelo González: Yes, the competent authorities in the context of convenios/treaties seems more than plausible here. >Or 'the sciences' perhaps, as well -- keeping it somewhat vague, as in the source text

  -> Thank you, Marcelo. At least in my reading, the original refers to *govermental* (rather than non-governmental) organizations. In the US, NASA would be one example of such an organization.

disagree  Holly-Anne Whyte: I'm not sure we can be certain that the 'convenios' are treaties between states or that the bodies are governmental, especially where different countries' systems are concerned. I would check with the client before assuming something not in the source.
5 hrs
  -> I do not see how “organismos al cargo del área científica de cada país” can be read as *not* referring to *governmental oversight organizations* here.
