To confirm this we need a Panamanian, but I can imagine that the official name of this bonus, "décimo tercer mes", seemed rather a mouthful, and that in time it became customary to cut it down to just the first part "décimo". So for example, instead of saying "Acaban de pagarnos el décimo tercer mes", people said "Acaban de pagarnos el décimo", and "Nos han quitado el décimo tercer mes" became "Nos han quitado el décimo". This became established usage, and so people called payments of this bonus "décimos". Note that my first reference refers to "décimos terceros meses". This is ungrammatical; the correct plural is "décimo terceros" (or "décimoterceros"). The writer has filled out the name from the customary abbreviated name, "décimos". |
