DonCarlos et al have shown that of the glial cells only activated microglia express androgen receptors, whereas activated astrocytes express estrogen receptors. They also found that AR immunostaining was heavier in frontal cortex than the hypothalamic-limbic structures. In addition, the demonstration that microglia direct neuronal precursor cell migration and differentiation and that activated microglia can increase neuronal numbers significantly may explain the hyper-cellularity seen in certain areas of the autistic brain, particularly the amygdala.
