English term or phrase: pulled the bandage off quick as it were
Lucky grimaced at the image that flashed in his mind, but he had never thought about it. He suddenly realized it had been a very long time since he marked his path. It was dry out, and he needed a drink. Adriana had the only water.
“No, sorry, my human has the water, but by the look of the sky, we should get rain very soon.” He was not surprised when the angry black cloud let a few drops fall to prove his point. “See, we might get a shower soon enough.”
“That can’t be good… this land isn’t meant to get rain. Something must be wrong with the winds.” Smigget followed the drops as they landed around him with higher frequency.
“Listen, I need to tell you and show you something, but I need you to promise you will not freak out… Understand?”
Smigget contemplated Lucky with a blank-faced stare. “How the Torment can you ask someone that and not expect them to freak out before they even know what it is they can’t freak out about?” Smigget’s breaths came in quick shallow successions. “By the very question, I have to assume it is something so horrible the natural reaction would be to freak, so now I am freaking, when if you just told me… pulled the bandage off quick as it were, I might have been fine!”
“Look, sit down before you fall off the cliff and die.” Lucky tried to calm his fox friend down, but that didn’t help much.
“Die… why the Torment did you say that? You know we can’t die… Oh, my Potent, we can die now, can’t we?” Smigget swooned. “I think I’m about to faint.” Which he did, and promptly fell off the cliff face into the ravine
