" Yes, it's a done deal. What we need to do is return U/I, and go back and do the fettling jobs to get the U/I (certificate issued???) ;

'Fettling' is the finishing touches in heavy industry and construction; removing welding and plaster/cement burrs, for example, repairing dodgy latches and window seals, door trims, etc. In new-build construction, the site foreman/clerk of works draws up a list of items needed to be done, a fettling list, and people are contracted to do this work.

Thomas Walker: I don't know about the UK, Andrew, but in 50+ years of working around construction & engineering in the US, I have never once heard "fettle" or "fettling." Nor did a Bing search turn up anything along the lines you're suggesting.

philgoddard: I found a couple of dictionaries that listed this as UK dialectal, and one mentioned northern England. So I don't agree with your choice of word, but this could be the meaning.
