I have worked with photographers preparing their photographs for publication, and they frequently mark the prints for adjustments to the light, color, framing, etc.

agree  Jennifer Levey: The 'marked-up photos' are exhibited as part of the curator's attempt to show that 'iconic' photos, often written-off with remarks such as 'the photographer got lucky', are in fact the fruit of a complex creative process.
